About the school
Samsun is quite a big city with a population of 350 000 people. Our school was set up in the current, 2010-2011, school year. We have 150 students and 17 teachers, it is a public and non-profit school, our students come to our school after an entry exam and it is called Anatolian high school in Turkey.
They are so hard-working and intelligent students. We offer 6 English lessons + 2 German lessons a week throughout the first year as they have a high level education (e. g. the rate of passing university entry exams is quite high with these types of schools). But our students don't have an opportunity to improve their English so they forget it during the years as they don't have the chance to go abroad because their parents have limited salaries and can’t send their children abroad. Since their parents have never gone to Europe before, we want to give our hard-working students a chance to do this.
All the parents and teachers are sure that they will work on this project with their European friends very well and will manage to realise all the plans. We want to support our students’ creativity and enterprise and provide them with some tools on how to deal with difficult situations at school and in everyday life. This way, they will develop a sense of friendship among themselves through the experience of exchanges with children from different cultures.
Our school is located on a hill on which in 1995 there were found 3 different tombs: one male and 2 females. It is thought this is a family tomb of Kingdom of Pontus - one king, one queen and their daughter with their jewellery so our area is very important as a historical point and that is one of the reasons we are very eager to work on this project
Also, the Amazons were said to had lived in Pontus, today’s SAMSUN -TERME. There are so many legends and myths about them in this area and we hope that our students will research and learn about them through this project.
